How Memory Match Works

Tap to flip

All cards start face-down. Tap two to flip them up. Match → they stay. Miss → they flip back. The fewer moves to clear the board, the better.

Audio on flip

Word cards play their pronunciation when flipped. Children hear the word as they see it — connecting sound, spelling, and meaning in a single action.

Three modes

Pair words with pictures, with the same letters scrambled, or with their definitions. Each mode trains a different aspect of spelling and vocabulary.

Five board sizes

2×2 for the youngest learners up to 6×6 for serious memory challenges. Pick what fits the child's attention span and skill.

Personal best

Fewest moves, then fastest time. Stored in your browser per mode and board size — every run is a chance to break the record.

Four dialects

US, UK, Australian, and Canadian English. Cards use the dialect you pick so spelling stays accurate for your region.

Three Ways to Match

Each mode targets a different cognitive skill. Try all three.

🖼️

Pictures & Words

Each pair has one illustration card and one word card. The most intuitive mode — perfect for early readers building word-to-picture associations.

🔀

Words & Scrambled

Each pair has the word in normal letters and the same letters scrambled. Kids must read both to recognise the match — pure orthographic pattern recognition.

📖

Words & Definitions

Each pair has a word and its short definition. Builds vocabulary alongside spelling. Available with a free account.

Why Matching Builds Spelling

Memory games look simple, but the cognitive work is doing a lot for early literacy.

Orthographic pattern recognition

To match a word card with its scrambled version, the brain has to recognise letter patterns regardless of order — the same fluency a confident speller uses to read.

Audio-spelling anchoring

Hearing the word when its card flips connects sound to letter sequence in working memory. Repetition across matches reinforces both at once.

Word-meaning binding

The Definitions mode forces kids to read short, kid-friendly explanations of words. Pairing definition to spelling teaches vocabulary alongside orthography.

Low-pressure repetition

Unlike spelling tests, there's no failure state in Memory Match. Wrong guesses just flip back — kids learn by exposure, not punishment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Memory Match free to play?

Yes. Anyone can play the Pictures & Words mode with the Animals theme on small boards (2×2 and 3×4) without an account. Create a free account to unlock all themes, the Words & Definitions mode, and larger boards up to 6×6.

What age is Memory Match for?

All ages. The 2×2 board is approachable for the youngest kids; 6×6 with definition cards challenges middle schoolers. Pick a board and theme that fits.

What are the three modes?

Pictures & Words pairs an illustration with its word. Words & Scrambled pairs a word with the same letters in scrambled order — kids must read both to spot the match. Words & Definitions pairs each word with a short definition.

Does it track my score?

Personal best (fewest moves, then fastest time) is stored locally in your browser for each combination of mode and board size. Nothing is uploaded.

Does Memory Match support British or Australian spelling?

Yes. Pick a dialect on the start screen — US, UK, Australian, or Canadian — and the cards will use that variant where it differs.

Do I need to type anything?

No. Memory Match is tap-only. Kids who aren't ready to type can still play and build word recognition.
