A one-button rhythm runner where every letter of the word is a fork in the road. Jump to the beat, then take the road with the right letter.
Play Spell Dash — FreeFree · Ages 7+ · No download · Best on a phone turned sideways
The word is spoken during a short runway before the first fork. The letters collected so far show in a strip at the top.
Tap the screen, press Space or click to jump spikes and gaps in time with the music. Easy jumps does the jumping for you.
The track forks into lanes, each ending in a gate with a letter. Tap to head for the gate that is next in the word. You have plenty of time to read.
A wrong gate is a crash. You see the right letter, then restart at once with the roads reshuffled. Finish the last gate to clear the level.
It looks like an arcade game, but the only way to get through a level is to spell the words.
The word isn't one big choice. It is a fork for each letter, so a child has to produce the whole spelling left to right, one letter at a time.
Lanes and decoy letters change on every attempt. Remembering that the top road was right doesn't work, so repeated tries build the spelling instead of a route.
A wrong gate shows the right letter straight away and the retry starts in a second. The feedback lands while the child is still thinking about the word.
Take the jumping away and what is left is the spelling choice. Children who aren't ready for a rhythm platformer can still play the same levels.
There is no countdown and no score clock. The track moves to the music, but the choice at each fork stays open for a good long moment, and the letters are readable well before you have to tap. Choosing a letter is never a reflex test. The only thing the beat asks for is jumping the obstacles, and Easy jumps does that for you.
Ages 7 and up. Younger children, or anyone who finds timing hard, can switch on Easy jumps. The runner then clears every obstacle automatically and the child only taps to choose a letter. Easy jumps never picks a letter for them, so the spelling is always theirs.
Yes. Signed-in children play the words from their own lists, and anyone can pick a list from the start screen. Without a list the game uses a built-in word set matched to the level.
Spell Dash is built to the WCAG flash guidance. Nothing flashes more than three times a second, the beat pulse only changes brightness slightly, and a crash is a quick pop of shards with a brief soft fade, never a red full-screen flash. There is also a reduced-motion setting that removes screen shake and the background pulse.
The runner crashes, the correct letter is shown, and the attempt restarts straight away from the last checkpoint. Each attempt shuffles which road carries which letter, so kids can't win by remembering where the right road was. They have to read the letters and spell.
It is free and runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install. A free SpellCrush account lets a child's progress and rewards follow them.
