2nd Grade Spelling Games
Second grade spelling is about choosing between spellings that sound the same. Our 2nd grade list works on vowel teams (rain and play, tree and beach, boat and snow), r-controlled vowels (car, bird, corn), the endings -ing, -ed, -er and -est, and compound words like sunshine. These games make your child commit to one spelling, letter by letter, which is where those choices get learned.

Games that play the 2nd grade list
Spell Dash
Rhythm runner · Ages 7+
Every letter is a fork in the road, so a vowel-team word like train or beach is a run of choices, with both letters of the team picked at the right forks. Easy jumps handles the timing.
Spelling Quiz
Pick the spelling · Ages 5+
Long vowels can be spelled several ways, which is why a misspelling of dream or boat can look right. The quiz puts the real spelling next to close misses.
Word Scramble
Tap & drag · Ages 4–14
Compound words like sunshine and backpack unscramble faster once your child spots the two small words inside, a habit worth having.
Beat Speller
Rhythm · Ages 5+
Words with endings, like jumped and playing, fall letter by letter on the beat, and the ending has to be hit as carefully as the start.
Treasure Tower
Press your luck · Ages 7+
Each word spelled right climbs a floor and doubles the coins, then your child decides whether to cash out. R-controlled words like bird and turn make for a quick climb.
Spell Duel
Versus · Ages 5+
Two players share a tablet, hear the same 2nd grade word and race to build it from the same letters. The word is only spoken, so it's a listening race.
What's on the 2nd grade list
Five groups. The vowel teams and r-controlled vowels are the heart of it: each group is a sound with more than one spelling.

Questions parents ask
Why does my 2nd grader write rain as rane?
Because rane is a sensible guess: the long a sound can be spelled ai, ay or a-e. Choosing the right team is the main spelling job in 2nd grade, and games that make your child pick one spelling at a time, like the quiz and Spell Dash's letter forks, help more than copying the word out.
Is Spell Dash too fast for a 7-year-old?
It's made for ages 7 and up, and Easy jumps takes the timing away: the runner clears every obstacle on its own and your child only taps to choose letters. The game never chooses a letter for them.
Can two siblings play together?
Yes, in Spell Duel: a split screen on one tablet, where both players hear the same word and race to spell it from identical letter trays. Pick the younger child's list, since both get the same words.
How long should a 2nd grader play?
Ten to fifteen minutes. Beat Speller has no fail state and Treasure Tower ends whenever your child cashes out, so both have a natural stopping point.
