Kindergarten Spelling Games
Kindergarten spelling starts with listening. Our kindergarten list is the 40 Dolch pre-primer sight words, short word families like cat, hat and mat, and the color and number words. Every game below says each word out loud and none of them needs a keyboard, so start with Sound Catcher if your child is still learning letter sounds.

Games that play the kindergarten list
Sound Catcher
Phonics · Ages 4–6
Your child hears a word from the list, such as hat or bug, sees its picture and taps the sound it starts with. No reading needed.
Memory Match
Brain warmup · Ages 4+
The list opens in Words and Definitions: flip two cards to match a kindergarten word with its meaning. Each word is read aloud as its card turns, so read the meaning cards together.
Word Scramble
Tap & drag · Ages 4–14
Hear a word and its clue, then drag the letter tiles into order. The word families help: a child who has built cat can work out hat.
Splat Attack
Whack-a-mole · Ages 5+
Monsters pop up holding letters. Hear a word like bug and smash b, u, g in order; the Little setting keeps the pace gentle for five-year-olds.
Spell Crush
Match 3 · Ages 5+
Match candies to pop the letters of each word, one letter at a time. There is no timer and no lives, so a short word like blue is a calm first win.
Also try: Picture Speller plays its own picture packs (animals, food, colors) rather than this list, and suits the same age.
What's on the kindergarten list
Five groups, each short enough to finish in a week or two. The games mix them, so a round might go from a sight word to a number word.

Questions parents ask
Do kindergartners need to type to play?
No. Nothing on this page uses a keyboard. Sound Catcher is all taps, Word Scramble is drag and drop, Splat Attack is tap to smash and Spell Crush is swapping candies. Typing comes later: Spell Cast first appears on the 1st grade page.
My child can't read yet. Which game should we start with?
Sound Catcher. The word is spoken, the picture shows what it means, and the answer is a sound, so no reading is involved. Memory Match's meaning cards do need reading, so play that one side by side.
How long should a kindergartner play?
Five to ten minutes is plenty at this age, and stopping while it is still fun matters more than finishing a round. Sound Catcher's guest limit of 20 words a day happens to be about the right dose.
Will the games use exactly the words on the list?
Mostly. A game skips a word it can't use: the one-letter words "a" and "I" never play, and Sound Catcher needs a short word with a picture. If that leaves a round short, the game adds a few extra SpellCrush words and marks them as bonus words.
