Sight Word Games

Sight words are the words a child should know at a glance, and many of them can't be sounded out (said, was, come). Pick a list below: the five graded Dolch lists, the Dolch nouns, or the first three hundred Fry words. Every game then plays that list, read aloud, with no sign-up.

Questions parents ask

Which list should my child start with?

The one their school sends home. If you don't know, go by grade: Dolch Pre-Primer and Primer in Pre-K and kindergarten, Dolch First Grade or the Fry First 100 in 1st grade, then the 2nd and 3rd grade lists. The chips above are in teaching order.

Can a game teach sight words?

A game is best for the last step, recognizing a word instantly. New sight words are taught a few at a time with flashcards and real books; the games add the quick, repeated practice that makes them automatic.

Why does a game skip the shortest words?

Word Scramble, Splat Attack and Spell Runner need a word of three letters or more, so "go", "is" and "to" don't play there, and the one-letter words "a" and "I" play nowhere. A short round is topped up with extra SpellCrush words, marked as bonus words. Spell Crush plays two-letter words too.

What are the Dolch nouns?

A separate list of 95 everyday nouns, like apple, bird, house and tree, that Dolch published alongside his 220 service words. It suits kindergarten to 3rd grade, and nouns are the easiest sight words to picture, which makes them a friendly list to play.
