Fry's second hundred — words 101 to 200 in frequency order, usually taught across first and second grade.
The second hundred is where the list starts carrying content as well as structure. Alongside function words like over, through and another you get words that mean something on their own: animal, house, mother, picture, sentence.
Together, Fry's first and second hundreds account for around two-thirds of the words in most texts a child at this level will meet.
These are also more spellable than the first hundred. Many follow patterns a second grader is being taught in phonics at the same time, so sight word practice and spelling practice start to reinforce each other.

How to Teach the Fry Second 100 Words
By the second hundred, a child can usually decode part of each word, so the job shifts from pure recognition to speed and spelling accuracy.
- Read for speed, write for accuracy. Two different sessions, two different goals.
- Group by pattern where one exists. place, large, change share a spelling pattern worth naming out loud.
- Use them in dictation. Short sentences containing three or four list words is the most efficient practice at this stage.
- Keep the first hundred in rotation. Spaced review of earlier words costs two minutes and prevents most backsliding.
