How to Teach the Dolch First Grade Words
First grade is the right moment to move from flashcards to running text. The words on this list only make sense in company.
- Sentence dictation. Say a short sentence, have the child write it. Two or three list words per sentence, five sentences a session.
- Highlighter hunts. Give the child a printed page and one word to find and highlight everywhere it appears.
- Spell it aloud, then write it. First grade is where recognition has to become spelling, not just reading.
- Mixed review. Keep pre-primer and primer words in the rotation. Sight words decay fast without revisiting.
Two minutes daily beats twenty minutes weekly. Sight word recall is a memory task, and spaced repetition is how memory tasks are won.
