5th Grade Spelling Games

Fifth grade words are the ones spelling bees are built on. Our 5th grade list covers prefixes that change to fit the root (impossible, irresponsible, accept), the Latin roots aud, vis, dict, scrib, mit and ven, the i-before-e rule and its exceptions, and long academic words like hypothesis. These games only reward a word with every letter right, double letters included.

Games that play the 5th grade list

  • Spelling Quiz

Pick the spelling · Ages 5+

Absorbed prefixes are why accompany and accurate have a double c. The quiz asks your child to pick the real spelling from close misspellings, which is exactly where a double letter gets lost.

  • Treasure Tower

Press your luck · Ages 7+

Spelling bee words like conscience and millennium are worth a high floor. Your child chooses when to cash out, and a miss sends them down.

  • Spell Duel

    Versus · Ages 5+

Two players, one spoken word, the same letter tray: a quick head-to-head on the shorter list words, like admit, vision and event, before a class bee.

  • Memory Match

    Brain warmup · Ages 4+

Roots carry meaning (aud is hear, vis is see), and matching list words to their definitions shows a child the root at work in each one.

  • Spell Cast

    Spelling RPG · Ages 6+

Academic words such as perspective and consequence make long incantations, and a misspelling only fizzles, so a hard word is safe to try.

Also try: Chunk Stack has a Master band that sets -able against -ible and builds roots like port, ject and spect, from its own word bank.

Questions parents ask

Are these games good spelling bee practice?

For the spelling, yes. Spell Duel is the closest thing to a bee: a word is spoken and the first correct spelling wins. A real bee also lets your child ask for the definition, and Memory Match practices exactly that link between a word and its meaning. To build a practice bee list, use our spelling bee generator.

Why are some 5th grade words missing from a game?

A few are longer than a game allows (characteristics and photosynthesis are over the 12-letter limit in Spell Cast and Treasure Tower), and a handful don't have a recorded clip yet. A game skips those and tops a short round up with extra SpellCrush words, marked as bonus words.

How long should a 5th grader play?

Fifteen to twenty minutes is plenty, and it works better spread over the week than crammed the night before a test. Guests get three Treasure Tower runs and three Spell Duel matches a day, which makes a natural daily stop.

Which game helps with i before e?

Any game that makes your child commit to the letter order, and the quiz is the quickest: seeing receive next to a close misspelling and picking the right one is the skill. The 5th grade word page explains the rule and its exceptions.
