4th Grade Spelling Games
Fourth grade spelling leans on Greek roots and longer endings. Our 4th grade list has tele, graph, phon, bio and geo words, the endings -tion, -sion, -ous, -ment and -ness, school words like evidence and estimate, irregular plurals such as mice and geese, and the classic traps separate and necessary. These games hold up with long words and make a near-miss count.

Games that play the 4th grade list
Spelling Quiz
Pick the spelling · Ages 5+
The list ends with words adults still get wrong, like separate and necessary. The quiz puts the real spelling beside close misspellings, so your child learns to reject the wrong one.
Memory Match
Brain warmup · Ages 4+
The academic words on this list turn up in science, math and reading lessons. Matching each one to a short meaning builds the vocabulary along with the spelling.
Word Scramble
Tap & drag · Ages 4–14
Unscrambling photograph or telescope gets much easier once your child spots the Greek root, which is the habit this list is meant to build.
Spell Cast
Spelling RPG · Ages 6+
Words ending in -tion and -ous make long incantations, and the spell only fires when the ending is right as well as the start.
Treasure Tower
Press your luck · Ages 7+
Irregular plurals like wolves, children and geese don't follow the add-an-s rule. A wrong letter means a fall, so it pays to slow down before climbing.
Also try: Chunk Stack has a Master band with -tion, -able and Latin roots, built from its own word bank rather than this list.
What's on the 4th grade list
Five groups. Almost every word here is long, and nearly all of them are built from a root and an ending your child can learn once and reuse.

Questions parents ask
How do I help my 4th grader with words like separate and necessary?
These stick once your child has seen the wrong version and rejected it. The Spelling Quiz shows the real spelling beside close misspellings, and the 4th grade word page has a memory trick for each of the eight words in that group.
Are Greek roots worth learning at this age?
Yes, because one root unlocks a family: graph is in photograph, autograph and paragraph, and tele is in telephone and telescope. In Word Scramble, a child who spots the root has half the word sorted before they start.
My 4th grader finds these too easy. What next?
Move up to the 5th grade games, or stay with this list in Treasure Tower and aim for a higher floor before cashing out. Climbing is easy; deciding when to stop is the challenge.
Do these games work on a phone?
Yes. All five run in a phone or tablet browser with nothing to install, and the same goes for a laptop or a classroom computer.
